Craven 3D have recently been heavily involved in the current project
to bring Dan Brown’s The Da Vinci Code, one of the most popular
and controversial novels of our time, to the big screen. Directed
by the Oscar® winning Ron Howard, the film boasts an all-star
cast headed by two-time Academy Award® winner Tom Hanks, along
with Audrey Tautou, Jean Reno, Sir Ian McKellen and Alfred Molina.
The Da Vinci Code begins with a spectacular
murder in the Louvre Museum. All clues point to a covert religious
organisation that will stop at nothing to protect a secret that
threatens to overturn 2000 years of accepted dogma.

Plowman Craven 3D have been working closely
with the film’s VFX team to survey and produce accurate digital
models of many of the cast, sets, props and locations featured in
the film. We used the full range of our LIDAR, close range and cyber
scanning technology to create cost-effective and highly accurate
digital models, including some CNC milled heads cut from foam for
the Art Department to use as a basis for statuary. Sadly, although
the book and film features exotic locations in many countries around
the world, Plowman Craven 3D undertook most of its work at film
studios in and around London. However, an exciting highlight was
provided when we were laser scanning the exterior of Westminster
Abbey during a full-scale anti-Iraq War demonstration in Parliament
Square; complete with speeding Police vehicles and covert surveillance
cameras. All the work was a rewarding challenge that
saw the burgeoning relationship between Plowman Craven 3D and Gentle
Giant Studios (our Entertainment Industry partner in the USA) put
to good effect. The Da Vinci Code production was able to utilise
the full range of scanning and modelling skills provided by Plowman
Craven 3D and Gentle Giant - effectively using the pair as a one-stop-shop
for all their digital data requirements. |
